Skimming applies a thin finishing coat of plaster — usually 2 to 3mm — over an existing wall or ceiling to create a smooth, flat, paint-ready surface. It’s ideal for walls that are sound but tired, patchy, cracked or covered in old paint and filler.
Cost depends on the size of the room, the number of surfaces and their condition. A single wall or ceiling is a small job; a full room is more involved. We give a fixed, itemised quote after a quick look so you know the exact price up front.
Yes — it’s one of the most popular jobs we do. We can skim directly over sound artex or over-board first where needed, leaving a flat, modern ceiling. Pre-2000 textured coatings are handled with appropriate care.
Allow roughly three to seven days for fresh skim to dry fully, depending on weather and ventilation. It turns from dark brown to an even pale pink when ready, and the first coat should be a thinned mist coat.
It depends on the wall. If the existing plaster is solid, a skim is faster, cleaner and cheaper. If it’s blown or hollow, it needs cutting back and re-plastering first. We always advise honestly which your wall needs.
Yes. Skimming flattens fine cracks, old filler, brush marks and lining-paper joints for a seamless surface. Larger structural cracks are cut out and repaired first so they don’t reappear.
